There is a reason why young, urban professionals are known as an upwardly mobile type. After all, urban professionals work in cities, which are nexuses of energy and creativity. In that sort of environment, a person who has high energy, high intelligence and a high level of ambition can do a lot of great things, even up to and including changing the world. And as you begin to make changes to the world (especially those which involve you most directly), you begin to have a lot of options that you never had before. One of those options is in deciding where you want to live.
A lot of times, middle class people have three options. They can live below their means, and invest like crazy to be able to retire earlier than most people even dream of doing. They can live right at their means, and continue to move up the property ladder every time they experience a substantial raise or a promotion. Or they can purchase a home that is in the neighborhood they want, and at a price range they can afford right now, and fix it up so that it will be the home of their dreams in time.
Granted, fixing up the home is going to have a lot of costs associated with it. If all you have to do is get some moving quotes and buy lots of cleaning supplies, you should have no problem having the home of your dreams in a few months to a year from now. However, if there are lots of major repairs to be made (bathroom issues, roof issues, a problem with the wiring, etc.), you could be looking at a long term thing. The same energy, intelligence and ability to see beyond today’s problems which serve you at work will serve you well in your new home, too.
