Pros and Cons of School Dress Codes

Even though they are taught the same curriculum, students that attend a school with a dress code and students that attend a school without a dress code have vastly different experiences. What accounts for the difference? Do students learn better in strict or relaxed environments? Does clothing matter at all? Parents are found supporting both sides of the argument. So, here are some of the pros and cons of school dress codes.

Pros

  • They teach discipline. With a dress code, students have to be responsible for their attire or face penalties for missing articles of clothing or sloppy appearances.
  • Builds camaraderie. When all students dress alike, there is one less thing separating them.
  • Limits fighting. Dressing in the same fashion lowers the potential for bullying or fighting based on a student’s appearance.
  • Students take school more seriously. When students dress professionally, they are more likely to take their studies seriously. Much like in the working world.

Cons

  • Hinders creativity. With a dress code, students are unable to express themselves creatively in their attire, which can stunt their abilities in other artistic endeavors.
  • Creates friction between student and school. Students are more likely to rebel against and express anger toward their school when forced to adhere to certain restrictions, like dress codes.
  • Clothing has little influence. Some studies have shown that clothing doesn’t affect behavior.
  • Limits student interaction. Without wearing what they want, students have a harder time discovering similar interests with other students, thus limiting their interaction and ability to develop relationships.
